Ingredients

Units Scale

Buttercream Frosting

  • 2 cups unsalted butter (room temperature)
  • 5 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp lime zest (approximately 1 to 2 limes)
  • 1/4 cup lime juice (freshly squeezed, about 3 to 4 limes)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp heavy cream

Instructions

  1. Whip the Butter: Add room temperature unsalted butter to a large mixing bowl or stand mixer bowl fitted with a whisk or paddle attachment. Whip on medium-high speed for about 5 minutes, scraping down the sides occasionally, until the butter is light, fluffy, and pale in color.
  2. Add Powdered Sugar: Add half of the powdered sugar and mix on the lowest speed until fully combined. Then add the remaining powdered sugar and continue mixing on low speed until completely incorporated.
  3. Incorporate Lime and Salt: Add lime zest, freshly squeezed lime juice, and salt to the mixture. Mix on low speed until all the ingredients are well combined.
  4. Add Heavy Cream: Slowly drizzle the heavy cream into the frosting while mixing on low speed. Scrape down the sides of the bowl to ensure even mixing.
  5. Finish Mixing: Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and whip the frosting for an additional 3 minutes until smooth, creamy, and spreadable.

Notes

  • This frosting requires only 6 ingredients and takes about 10 minutes to prepare.
  • The lime flavor provides a delightful tang that pairs perfectly with many cake and cupcake varieties.
  • Use room temperature butter for best whipping results.
  • If the frosting is too thick, add a little more heavy cream to reach the desired consistency.
  • For a lighter flavor, reduce the lime juice slightly.
