Description

This classic Salisbury Steak recipe features juicy, flavorful ground beef patties cooked in a rich mushroom and onion gravy, perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner. Made with simple ingredients like ground beef, breadcrumbs, and a savory sauce, it’s easy to prepare and can be served over mashed potatoes for a hearty meal.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Patties

  • 2 pounds extra lean ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper

For Cooking and Gravy

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 large onion, halved and sliced thinly
  • 8 ounces cremini mushrooms (optional)
  • 2 cups low sodium beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons cornstarch
  • ¼ teaspoon salt (or to taste)
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper (or to taste)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Use clean hands to mix thoroughly. Divide the mixture into six equal portions and shape each into an oval patty.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat olive oil and butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat until melted and hot. Add the patties to the skillet and fry for about 5 minutes on each side, or until they are no longer pink in the center. Remove the patties from the skillet and place them on a plate.
  3. Sauté Onions: Reduce the heat to medium and add the sliced onions to the same skillet. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes until the onions soften and begin to caramelize.
  4. Add Mushrooms: If using, add the cremini mushrooms to the skillet and cook together with the onions for an additional 3 minutes until golden brown.
  5. Make the Gravy: Stir in the beef broth, tomato paste, soy sauce, and Worcestershire sauce. In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with a bit of water or beef broth until smooth, then pour into the skillet. Continuously whisk the mixture until the sauce thickens, about 2 minutes.
  6. Warm Patties in Sauce: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spoon the mushroom gravy over them, and cook for another minute until the patties are heated through.
  7. Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve the Salisbury steaks over mashed potatoes or your preferred side dish.

Notes

  • This Salisbury Steak recipe is perfect for a comforting weeknight dinner and can be easily doubled or tripled for meal prep or freezer-friendly portions.
  • Using extra lean ground beef keeps the patties flavorful but not greasy.
  • Cremini mushrooms add rich earthiness, but you can omit them if preferred or substitute with button mushrooms.
  • Serving the steak and gravy over creamy mashed potatoes makes a classic pairing for a hearty meal.
  • Leftovers reheat well and freeze nicely for convenient future meals.
