Description

Grandma’s Cranberry Relish is a classic, old-fashioned recipe combining fresh cranberries, navel orange, and Granny Smith apple with a touch of sugar and cinnamon. This relish offers a perfect balance of tart and sweet flavors and a delightful texture, making it an ideal accompaniment to Thanksgiving turkey or holiday dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruits

  • 12 ounces fresh cranberries (washed, with any soft or bad cranberries removed)
  • 1 small navel orange (washed and unpeeled, cut into 1 inch chunks; about 1 heaping cup)
  • 1 Granny Smith apple (washed, unpeeled, cored, and cut into quarters)

Other Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup + 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare cranberries: Add the cranberries to a food processor and pulse about 20 times until coarsely chopped. Avoid overprocessing as you want some texture. Transfer the chopped cranberries to a medium mixing bowl.
  2. Process orange: Place the orange chunks into the food processor and pulse about 20-30 times until finely chopped with some small chunks of peel remaining. Add the chopped orange to the mixing bowl with the cranberries.
  3. Chop apple: Add the apple quarters to the food processor and pulse 20-30 times until finely chopped, scraping the sides as needed to ensure even chopping. Transfer the apple into the mixing bowl.
  4. Mix and chill: Add the granulated sugar and ground cinnamon (if using) to the mixing bowl with the fruit. Stir thoroughly to combine all ingredients evenly. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving. The relish can be made up to 3 days in advance.

Notes

  • This cranberry relish is a favorite fresh cranberry side, offering a vibrant flavor perfect for Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas dinner.
  • The ground cinnamon is optional but adds a subtle warmth complementing the tartness of the fruit.
  • Refrigeration enhances the melding of flavors and improves texture before serving.
  • Ensure cranberries are fresh and firm, discarding any soft or spoiled ones for best results.
