Ingredients
Scale
Sweet Potatoes
- 3 lb. sweet potatoes (about 5 medium), peeled and cut into 1/2-inch thick rounds
Glaze
- 1/2 cup light brown sugar
- 6 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted
- 1/4 cup maple syrup
- 1 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
- 1 tsp. ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. ground ginger
- Pinch of nutmeg
- 2 tsp. bourbon (optional)
- 1 tablespoon water
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400ºF (204ºC) to get it ready for baking the sweet potatoes.
- Prepare Glaze: In a large bowl, whisk together the light brown sugar, melted butter, maple syrup, 1 tablespoon of water, kosher salt, ground cinnamon, ground ginger, nutmeg, and bourbon if using. This mixture will form the delicious glaze that coats the potatoes.
- Toss Sweet Potatoes: Add the peeled and sliced sweet potatoes into the bowl with the glaze. Toss well to ensure every slice is evenly coated with the sweet and spiced mixture.
- Arrange in Baking Dish: Transfer the glazed sweet potatoes to a 13-by-9-inch casserole dish, spreading them out in an even layer. Pour any remaining glaze over the top to maximize flavor.
- Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45 to 60 minutes, stirring every 15 minutes. This helps to evenly cook the potatoes and thicken the glaze into a sticky, luscious coating.
- Cool and Serve: Once tender and beautifully glazed, remove the casserole from the oven. Let it cool for about 10 minutes before serving to allow the glaze to set slightly and enhance the flavors.
Notes
- Candied sweet potatoes make a delightful addition to holiday meals, especially Thanksgiving.
- The optional bourbon adds a rich, warm complexity but can be omitted for a non-alcoholic version.
- Stirring every 15 minutes helps create an even glaze and prevents sticking or burning.
- Use freshly peeled and even-cut sweet potatoes for consistent cooking results.
