Perfect for your Halloween celebrations, these cupcakes combine classic flavors with eye-catching decorative flair.

Ingredients

Scale

Chocolate Cupcakes

  • 1 box Chocolate Cake Mix

Buttercream Frosting

  • 1-2 batches of The Best Buttercream Frosting
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring – Pink
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring – Blue
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring – Yellow
  • Wilton Color Right Food Coloring – Black
  • Wilton 1M Frosting Tip
  • Decorating Bag

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cupcakes: Make a batch of vanilla cupcakes following your favorite recipe or the instructions on the cake mix box, baking them until a toothpick inserted comes out clean. Let the cupcakes cool completely before frosting.
  2. Make Buttercream Frosting: Prepare 1-2 batches of the Best Buttercream Frosting recipe depending on how many cupcakes you plan to frost. Ensure the frosting is smooth and creamy for easy piping.
  3. Color the Frosting: Divide the frosting into three portions and tint them using the Wilton Color Right Food Coloring. Combine pink, blue, and yellow to create purple for the bottom swirl, mix blue and yellow for green in the middle swirl, and leave one portion black for the top swirl. Portion sizes should be approximately 1 cup purple, 3/4 cup green, and 1/2 cup black.
  4. Pipe the Base Swirl: Fit the decorating bag with the Wilton 1M tip and fill it with the purple frosting. Starting at the outer edge of the cupcake, pipe one and a half circles around the edge, creating the largest swirl layer.
  5. Pipe the Middle Swirl: Rinse the bag and tip, then fill it with the green frosting. Pipe another one and a half circles inside the purple swirl, making this layer slightly smaller than the base layer.
  6. Pipe the Top Swirl: Finally, fill your piping bag with black frosting. Pipe a final third circle inside the green swirl, finishing with an upward flourish to create a peaked tip in the center of the cupcake.

Notes

  • Chocolate cupcakes topped with multi-colored swirls of homemade buttercream make these cupcakes perfect for Halloween celebrations.
  • Use gel food coloring to achieve vibrant colors without thinning the frosting.
  • If you prefer, prepare an extra batch of frosting to ensure you have enough for all cupcakes.
  • Allow cupcakes to cool completely before frosting to prevent melting the buttercream.
  • The Wilton 1M tip creates a classic rosette swirl that is ideal for layering colors.
